Frequently Asked Questions
Is this letter legitimate? Who is Baker Tilly?
Yes, the letter you received is a legitimate notice containing information relating to money that may be owed to you. Baker Tilly is a leading advisory, tax, and assurance firm who, as part of their services, assists companies with their statutorily required unclaimed property duties, including outreach to potential owners of unclaimed funds. Any questions around the property in question should be directed back to the Holder/Company name listed on the letter, not Baker Tilly.
Why did I receive this notification letter?
State law requires this notification process to occur once a check is not cashed or an account credit is inactive for a specified period of time, generally between one to five years. This notification does not guarantee that the property listed on your claim letter is due to you. If we determine the property has already been paid to you or is not due to you, you will receive a follow up communication by mail or email. Please allow 10-12 weeks or more for processing.
How does property become unclaimed?
It is common in the normal course of business that individuals or businesses lose track of checks that were issued to them, or account balances owed to them. State unclaimed property laws define abandonment rules and periods for these types of situations. Once property reaches the defined abandonment period with no activity, the company holding the property must remit the property over to the state to be held until the owner comes forward to claim the property. Can I get more information about the transaction(s) listed on this letter? Unfortunately, all information that is available about this transaction has been included in the letter. Please make your best determination on whether the funds are owed and respond accordingly.
Is this a bill?
No, this is not a bill. These are funds that may be owed to the person or company listed on the letter.
How do I submit my claim?
The simplest way to submit your claim is to return to the homepage of this website, enter your letter ID, and follow the prompts listed on the screen. If you prefer to submit a physical response, complete the information requested on the notification letter and return a completed copy using the address listed on the letter. DO NOT submit multiple claims or multiple responses as this will delay the research regarding your individual claim.
What if my address or my last name has changed?
If your address or last name has changed from the address shown on the letter, you may submit supporting documentation during the claim process on this website. Please refer to your letter for any specific documentation that may be required.
What if I am not the person listed on the letter or the person on the letter is deceased?
If you are not the person listed on the letter but believe you are entitled to claim the property, you may still submit a claim with any information you believe is relevant, but please note that we are only able to issue refund checks to the original payee or the estate of the original payee. If you are entitled to act on the behalf of the owner listed on the letter, you should be able to negotiate the check on their behalf. If you choose not to submit a claim, the funds will be remitted to the state of the owner as listed on the letter and you may later submit a claim directly to that state. Please note that it may take several months for report processing before your property can be claimed from the state.
When do I need to return my claim?
All claims must be returned by the due date noted on the letter. Claims received after this date will not be processed since the property may have been reported to the state as unclaimed property, as required by state law. Claims made after the due date must be made directly with the state listed on the letter. Please note that it may take several months for report processing before your property can be claimed from the state.
Who can I contact about this notice?
Unfortunately, due to the large volume of claims, we are not able to receive messages or return calls. We appreciate your understanding. All information that is available about this transaction has been included in the letter. Please make your best determination on whether the funds are owed and return your claim using one of the methods listed in the letter.
What is the fastest way to submit my claim?
The fastest method to submit your claim is to return to the homepage of this website, enter your letter ID, and follow the prompts listed on the screen.
What are common mistakes that may delay processing my claim?
Most potential mistakes can be avoided by submitting your claim through this website.
The most common mistakes that occur when submitting your claim through the mail include: 1) Not signing the claim letter, 2) checking both boxes on the form (only ONE box should be checked), 3) No boxes are checked (at least ONE box should be checked), 4) failure to provide required documentation listed on letter (where applicable). These mistakes, among others, may cause delays that will result in the property in the letter being remitted to the state of the owner as listed on the letter. If this occurs, you may later submit a claim directly to that state. Please note that it may take several months for report processing before your property may be claimed from the state.
How will I know my claim has been received?
For claims submitted through this website, you will have an opportunity to save or print a confirmation page at the end of the claim submission process. This page is confirmation of receipt of your claim, but does not guarantee reissuance of the funds. The ultimate decision to reissue the funds will be made upon review of your claim.
When will I receive payment?
Once we have confirmed that the amount is owed to you, and upon receipt of a completed claim, a refund check will be issued to the original payee or the estate of the original payee only. For all valid claims submitted, please allow 10 to 12 weeks for refund checks to be processed and mailed. Please do not submit multiple claims as multiple submissions will delay the process.
If the response deadline has passed, will my claim still be accepted?
No. After the deadline, the property will be reported to the state per the individual state’s unclaimed property laws. However, you may claim the property directly from the state listed on the letter. The state will simply safeguard it until you file a claim with the state and it can be returned to you.
How do I claim my property if it is remitted to the state?
Every state has an unclaimed property claim link on their website. You will need to go to the “Unclaimed Property” section of the applicable state website and follow the instructions for submitting a claim. In many instances, you can find the state website on MissingMoney.com. Go to the “Links” tab.
What if I do not want to respond to this letter or provide my personal information?
You are not required to respond to this letter. If you do not wish to respond to this letter or provide your personal information, the funds will be reported to the state listed on the letter. You will then have to submit your claim directly with the state in approximately 6-9 months depending solely upon when the individual state processes the report and posts the information to its unclaimed property website.
IF YOUR CLAIM IS INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT
the property will be remitted to the state per the individual unclaimed property laws of the state of the owner as listed on the letter. However, you may claim the property directly from the state listed on the letter. The state will simply safeguard it until you file a claim with the state and it may be returned to you.
